SuperByte’s global success story

Founded in 2018 by Simon Russell and Richard Adams, SuperByte has quickly made a big name for itself in the commercial real estate sector, delivering cutting-edge software solutions that help some of the world’s largest corporations manage their commercial properties.
We spoke to Simon & Rich about Superbyte’s genesis and learned why they plan to stay firmly Shrewsbury-based.

The Story
SuperByte was born when two experienced professionals from different industries saw an opportunity to combine their respective expertise in commercial real estate (Simon) and tech (Rich).
Simon, who previously commuted four days a week to London, had just finished a major project with a global client. During the project, he and Rich saw the potential in developing a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform that streamlined portfolio management for corporate real estate.
Initially, the two operated as separate freelance entities, but quickly realised that combining their efforts could lead to greater success. The theory proved true; shortly after joining forces, they won a significant contract with a US client, prompting them to merge their businesses and officially form SuperByte.
From the outset, the duo was determined to build a robust software platform without relying on external investment. This decision has allowed them to maintain complete control over the company's direction and growth, enabling them to focus on their top lines – the things that are truly important to them as businesspeople – while avoiding pressure from investors focused on the bottom line.
The Tech

SuperByte's software platform is designed to help large global organisations manage their commercial property portfolios strategically. In essence, it enables high-level decision-making within one streamlined platform.
This helps to address inefficiencies and disconnected processes in real estate management – and eliminates the need for messy spreadsheets containing the details of commercial property portfolios that could encompass thousands of buildings.
"We believed there was an opportunity to create a SaaS product that truly transforms the traditional approach to deliver and manage Real Estate. A SaaS product that gave the client a tool to see and process all the information about their portfolio, in a clear, decisive way," explained Simon.
"We have a reputation for delivering smart, cutting-edge tech solutions. As well as our core product, people often come to us to look for creative technical solutions - we have a reputation for being able to turn things around quickly. Because we’re smaller, we can be more pragmatic. We remove the inefficiencies.”
Its ability to provide creative technical solutions quickly and efficiently is a testament to SuperByte's agile approach, which is made possible by a relatively small, diverse team of around fifteen mathematicians, robotics experts, and coders.
This agility and a commitment to continuous innovation have kept SuperByte at the forefront of the industry, and attracted a clientele that includes Fortune 500 companies, some of which operate with around 100,000 employees.
Why Shrewsbury?

While SuperByte's reach is global, its heart remains in Shrewsbury. The company has embraced the town's slower pace and high quality of life, in stark contrast to the hectic environments of larger cities like London.
The team finds that living in Shropshire provides a better work-life balance but also offers attractive surroundings (and fresh air!) for clients visiting for deep-dive sessions away from the bustle of the capital.
"The beauty of being in Shrewsbury is a lot of our clients love to come and see us for a couple of days and get away from London," explains Rich.
On a typical visit, clients are hosted in local hotels, dine with the team in Shrewsbury’s best restaurants, and have the chance to get outdoors and take in the view of nearby Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty such as the Long Mynd (a mere twenty-five-minute drive from Shrewsbury town centre).
It’s a useful place to be for recruitment, too – while the company employs local people where possible, when it is necessary to look further afield, life and work in the centre of Shrewsbury offer an attractive proposition.
While working in London can see employees commuting upwards of an hour and a half to work, the SuperByte team’s longest commute is forty minutes when traffic is heavy; the shortest is a quick walk across town.
“If you’re starting a family, being in this area is perfect,” says Rich.
“There’s access to town events, but also endless opportunities to take the kids out in the countryside and teach them about nature, introduce them to farm animals – all the things you couldn’t do in a major urban centre!”
With this in mind, the lifestyle offered by the location can be a distinguishing factor when potential employees compare SuperByte to its city centre- or business park-based recruitment rivals.
SuperByte is actively involved in the local community, offering up spare desk space to coworkers for part of the week. Decorated by local artists Saffron Russell and Liz Mellor, the ultra-modern space offers London agency vibes in a historic building, next door to Charles Darwin’s childhood school!

The Future
While many seed-funded companies find themselves in a difficult position when investors demand outcomes 4-5 years after startup, SuperByte’s independent approach has allowed the founders to maintain their independence and growth with their long-term vision.
SuperByte is now exploring a new market, with the development of software targeted at smaller businesses. This new product aims to make advanced property management tools accessible to clients with just a handful of sites, as opposed to the many hundreds in its typical clients’ portfolios.
Recently, the company appointed a new non-executive director to help guide its expansion into the US market, where it already operates a virtual office in Delaware.
But though it may have global ambitions, SuperByte is committed to staying rooted firmly in Shrewsbury - the pace of life, great food and the fresh air are just too good to give up.
Simon’s advice for businesses just starting out? “Don’t feel you have to look at local clients to run a successful business. We chose Shrewsbury because we love it, but we reach clients all over the world – and most of our work comes in from the US.”
Sitting on balance chairs around a pool table in their vibrant, mural-patterned office, the buzz of happy diners drifting up from the al fresco seating on nearby Castle Street, Simon finishes our conversation on the perfect note:
“This virtual world we live in means you can work with anyone, anywhere, from your historic office in Shrewsbury. Trust me, your quality of life with thank you.”
