Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings named among RIBA National Awards winners
Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings is one of 26 winners in the 2024 RIBA National Awards for Architecture. The awards recognise the best architecture in the UK and this year's spotlighted existing buildings and structures that have been given a new lease of life thanks to innovative designs, developed by working with clients and local communities.
The Flaxmill underwent a £28 million restoration and opened publicly in 2022 creating multiple uses for the community. The Main Mill building is renowned as the grandparent of skyscrapers due to being the first iron-framed building in the world.
Commenting on the RIBA National Awards for Architecture winners, 2024 RIBA Awards Group Chair, Simon Henley, said, “We’re delighted to award these 26 projects across the UK and recognise their exceptional quality and the hard work of teams behind them. From projects engaged with technology, community, visual arts to hands-on making, these National Winners reflect the breadth of contemporary practice and how architecture itself is an inclusive medium that addresses many of society’s challenges.”
