Peter Barber to Lead New Homes Project at Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings
The next chapter of the Flaxmill Maltings' history is being written, and it's set to include beautiful new housing for Shrewsbury.
After an open tender process, Historic England has chosen social-impact developer Capital&Centric to take forward the residential development at the site of the historic mill - with designs led by award-winning architect Peter Barber OBE.
Barber is one of the UK’s most influential architects, known for reimagining what social housing can look like. From quiet mews streets to bold new neighbourhoods, his projects focus on people — creating lively, walkable places that bring communities together.
His practice, Peter Barber Architects, has picked up some of the country’s biggest housing awards, including the RIBA Neave Brown Award for Housing, and in 2022 he was honoured with the Soane Medal for his contribution to architecture. Recognised with an OBE and elected as a Royal Academician, Barber’s work shows how good design can transform everyday life.
Barber's designs will bring new life to the historic mill site by carefully weaving in exemplary homes that respect and complement the setting of the restored Main Mill and Kiln while creating a vibrant new neighbourhood for Shrewsbury.
Key to this project has been identifying a developer who will work respectfully with the local historic environment and eschew the cookie cutter developments seen around the nation.
Capital&Centric is a social impact property developer founded in Manchester by Adam Higgins and Tim Heatley in 2011. With a strong track record in transformational regeneration projects and numerous awards for design and social impact, the firm focuses on high-quality design, environmental sustainability and building genuine communities.
Previous projects include Crusader Mill in Manchester, a 200-year-old mill restored into design-led homes, Eyewitness Works in Sheffield, a restored historic cutlery works that featured on Channel 4’s The Big Interiors Battle, and Weir Mill, Stockport (pictured right).
