Shrewsbury Orthodox Church

St Julian's Church on Wyle Cop is one of Shrewsbury's oldest places of worship, with a dedication to the early Christian martyr St Juliana recorded before the Norman Conquest.

The present building was designed in 1748–50 by Thomas Farnolls Pritchard, the Shrewsbury-born architect best known for designing the Iron Bridge at Coalbrookdale. The rebuilding of St Julian's was his first major project, and its elegant classical interior with Tuscan columns remains largely intact. The south front was later embellished in Doric style in 1846. The church is Grade II* listed.

 Since 2024, Shrewsbury Orthodox Church, a parish of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain, has held its Sunday services and major feasts at St Julian's. The community is drawn from many nationalities, including traditionally Orthodox countries such as Greece, Cyprus, Romania, Ukraine, and Russia, as well as the local community.

English is the main language of services, but visitors will also hear ancient Greek, Romanian, and Church Slavonic. Orthodox worship can only be understood by participation - the icons, incense, and singing are ways Christians have been worshipping God since the birth of Christianity.

With regular Sunday attendance of well over a hundred and major feasts drawing hundreds more to Wyle Cop, this is one of the most rapidly growing churches in the town.
